What motions and part features do turning and milling describe?
Turning normally rotates the workpiece while a tool feeds to create outside diameters, bores, faces, tapers, grooves and threads related to rotational geometry. Milling normally rotates the cutting tool relative to the workpiece to create planes, profiles, slots, hole patterns and multi-face features.
Modern machines can combine turning and milling, but a turn-mill label still requires confirmation of machine architecture, workholding, access, synchronization and validation. The term alone does not prove a single-setup result.
Why are drilling, tapping, reaming and boring different holemaking operations?
Drilling commonly creates a hole from solid material or prepares it for later operations. Tapping creates an internal thread in a prepared pilot hole. Reaming commonly removes a small allowance to improve an existing hole. Boring enlarges, corrects or relates an existing hole through a controlled cutting path.
These definitions describe operation purpose only. Entry, exit, depth, intersecting holes, material, allowance, coaxial or positional relationships, tool access and inspection can change the actual route.
How do grooving, chamfering, counterboring and deburring differ?
Grooving creates a controlled groove width, depth and position. Chamfering creates defined edge geometry. Counterboring or countersinking creates a seat for a fastener or functional interface. Deburring controls unwanted sharp edges and residual burrs. Similar wording does not create the same dimensions or acceptance method.
The drawing should define the affected location, final processed state, allowable transitions and inspection. A general deburr note must not silently override sealing, electrical, assembly or measurement edges.
How should a buyer turn operation terms into an effective RFQ?
Describe part function, controlled geometry, material, quantity, critical characteristics, surfaces, processing and quality documents first. If a process or machine is mandated, state why it is required and how an alternative can be approved. Do not use a vague operation name in place of a drawing.
